Printed Copies or E-books: How Should I Publish?

e-Books vs PrintSelf-publishing has allowed more authors than ever before to get their work out to the public. Now, there are countless services that guide you through the publishing process and help get your book released in whatever format you choose.

However, simply putting your book out there isn’t necessarily going to guarantee success. There are a lot of elements to consider, each with its own set of benefits. The first of these is deciding whether to publish printed or electronic copies; here are a few things to consider before settling on a decision.

Cost Efficiency

One significant element that is often a deciding factor in publishing, particularly for first-time authors, is the cost of each format. While self-publishing no longer comes with the hefty price tag it used to, there are still a few charges if you want to guarantee your book the best chance of success.

In this field, e-books are the best way to go. Printed books require more expenditure to be made a reality. Though print-to-order contracts have reduced this cost considerably, it still ranks higher than its digital counterpart. To get an idea of the cost discrepancies, consider this: Print costs include the actual materials for printing, labor costs, time on the press and many more factors, whereas e-books simply require formatting and submitting. This means that releasing online can be over $100 cheaper, depending on with whom you publish. While there are often discounts if you opt for both formats, if you are writing with a limited budget, e-books are the way to go.

Audience Reach

Another key factor in ensuring your book has the best chance to do well is considering the audience you’re aiming to reach. This is another element that is heavily influenced by your choice of

E-Books vs Traditional Publishing

publishing format. While online distributors make it easy to promote your work to readers worldwide, many companies have shipping restrictions and will only ship to certain regions. Even the ones that will ship globally often incur higher postage prices for international purchases.

Because of this, e-books also come out on top in this area. With the Amazon Kindle providing a convenient way for global users to download your book easily and cheaply, alongside several other mobile and computer apps that can support the e-book format, choosing to distribute digitally automatically affords you to reach more readers than if you opt for a print-only release.

Purpose & Readership

E-book CultureHowever, when considering your audience, if you only focus on numbers, then you’re going to struggle to find much traction. Each type of book has its own unique set of readers, and each of these has different requirements in terms of their format preference.

For example, surveys have shown that children prefer reading print books, potentially because they require fewer fine-motor skills to handle. Similarly, there are many parents, or just general readers, who worry about security issues around internet-based reading devices, so they would predominantly opt for print copies. While the use of a Virtual Private Network can subvert this risk—see this Secure Thoughts review for more information—it’s still a vital factor to consider when making your publishing decisions.

On the flipside, books for older audiences may be better in e-book format. As more and more of the older generation becomes technically competent, the ability to change font size on devices, such as the Kindle, means that poor eyesight no longer has to prevent them from indulging in exciting new literature

While there is no one-size-fits-all answer for questions like this, it is worth giving it some thought, as it could have a significant impact on the success of your release.

Book Culture

E-Books become mainstreamIt may seem like opting for an e-book release is hands down the best option, there is one avoidable factor that may convince you to go the other way. Book culture, and many book lovers, are largely traditionalist, with many actively promoting the benefits of reading over other screen-based activities. This love of books isn’t just about the act of reading; it covers the whole book experience, including going to bookshops, making a purchase and holding a physical copy in your hands to enjoy.

These types of literature purists often lament the advent of the e-book, claiming it will never be the same as a true book. Readers want to build up libraries, have the ability to flick back and forth through their novels with ease and feel the satisfaction of closing the back cover once the story is over. This is a culture that makes up a large amount of bookworms and one that isn’t going anywhere soon. If there’s any way you can run a physical print, it’s worth doing.

In short, an ideal book release would offer buyers the option of both physical and digital copies to attract the greatest and most diverse readership possible. However, in a case where you can only opt for one, these four factors are important to consider before making your choice. What are you waiting for? Send your manuscript over to a publisher and start your self-publishing journey today!

Out on Foot

Out on Foot: Nightly Patrols and Ghostly Tales of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent by Rocky Elmore

The new book Out on Foot: Nightly Patrols and Ghostly Tales of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent is a book released in 2015 by Rocky Elmore.  Mr. Elmore joined the United States Border Patrol, he knew it would be a journey fraught with danger. But little did he know that the very real trails he walked night after night would soon lead him into surreal encounters from a different dimension. This was never more evident than when the ghost of a recently fallen fellow agent began to appear on top of the cliff from which he died. It marked the beginning of the end to one of the most bizarre series of events in the history of the U.S.Out on Foot Border Patrol.

Out on Foot: A Collection of True Stories

This collection of true stories provides a rare look into law enforcement that includes not only the routine nightly patrols of the USBP but also actual paranormal activity as it happened to the agents in the field. Readers will go on nightly patrols with the agents of the Brown Field Border Patrol Station, and will face their worst fears as they come face to face with smugglers, mountain lions, ghosts, and even a Sasquatch in this isolated no-man’s land. OUT ON FOOT takes place in the mysterious Otay Mountains just east of San Diego, California. It is an emotional roller coaster ride that is not for the faint of heart.

If you listen to the media in 2016, there is a lot of talk about illegal immigration and the U.S. Border.  This book despite containing ghost stories and dangerous encounters also helps the reader understand what an average night on patrol is like for these law enforcement officers.  The author places you in the field with these brave men and women, and you will feel as if you are there in the action alongside them.  Out on Foot: Nightly Patrols and Ghostly Tales of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent is perhaps one of the best edge of your seat books you will read, and you cannot help but gain a renewed respect for the most dangerous law enforcement branch in the U.S.

Praise for Out on Foot

Readers writing reviews on Amazon have described Out on Foot: “This book offers the reader an extraordinary journey into a world so far removed from normal that it almost respresents a different reality. I had very little knowledge of our border patrol officers and even less about those individuals whose mission it is to successfully cross the border into the US, some apparently two or three times the very same night! The dangers, the physical demands, the emotional stress and the drama of confronting the unknown in the black of night make the job of our border patrol agents one of the most challenging of any profession in the world.”

Others have said “I really enjoyed this book. My only complaint is that it had to end” and “Rocky Elmore has done a great job of describing many aspects of the border patrol that citizens like myself are unaware of.”

So this could be the most informative and exciting, as well as timely, book you will read about this subject this summer.

Book Review: The Book Thief

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

In historical fiction, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak always rises to the top due to it’s status as a New York Times Bestseller.  The story is set in 1939 in Nazi Germany and is told through the eyes of death, who has never been busier.  Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich whom death observes and narrates for as she scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

This book is superb, and rich with passion and intense foreboding as it moves along.  Zusak keeps the reader engaged with pace of this unforgettable tale, ever on the edge simply because one is reminded of who is narrating it.  Overall it is a brilliant story that places one in the reality of Nazi Germany during World War II, and it feeds the soul.

The Book Thief: A Masterpiece of Historical FictionI Am the Messenger - Author of 'The Book Thief'

When you read it, you will be convinced that this is a true masterpiece of historical fiction and it will soon float up to your own personal top ten list.  The author, Markus Zusak was born in 1975 and is the author of five books, including the international bestseller, The Book Thief , which is translated into more than forty languages. His book I Am the Messenger won numerous national readers choice awards across Europe, including the highly regarded Deutscher Jugendliteratur prize in Germany.

Praise for The Book Thief

It is The Book Thief , however, that has established Markus Zusak as one of the most successful authors to come out of Australia. To date, The Book Thief has held the number one position at Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, the New York Times bestseller list, as well as in countries across South America, Europe and Asia. It has also been in the top five bestsellers in the UK and several other territories. It has amassed many and varied awards, ranging from literary prizes to readers choice awards to prizes voted on by booksellers. It was the only book to feature on both the USA and UK World Book Night Lists in 2012, and has now been adapted into a major motion picture.

If You Hold a Seed

If You Hold a Seed by Elly MacKay

Elly MacKay has written a classic with If You Hold a Seed which shows children something magical happens when you plant a dream with a seed. With plenty of love and patience, they can blossom into an extraordinary gift.  To be shared with those you love and those with big dreams, this book encourages us to never give up.

This story is about a boy who discovers the magic of a seed when he plants it in the ground. But first it takes some sun and rain and plenty of waiting . . . and then some more waiting. Little by little, the boy notices buds and tender leaves on a sprouting tree, and a host of insects that make their home in the new growth. As the quiet story cycles through the seasons and the passing years—and the continual waiting—both the boy and tree grow bigger, until the tree is strong enough to hold the boy, and the boy holds one of the tree’s seeds, ready to start the magic again.

Praise for If You Hold a Seed

Praise for the book by readers has been extraordinary.  One review on Amazon has written “What sets this book apart is Elly MacKay’s artwork. Her If You Hold a Seedexquisitely crafted illustrations, which she expertly lights and photographs in her mini “theater” transport the reader (and the young audience member) to another world; a world of dream and fantasy.”  Another reader described the book as “This beautiful book showcases Elly’s touch for creating scenes of idyllic childhood memories and dreams while teaching about the fascinating life of a seed. Cleverly and artfully done.”

If you Hold a Seed… A Serendipitous Story

Publishers Weekly characterized the book as “Glowing paper dioramas are the heart and soul of MacKay’s debut. . . .”  City Book Review called it “A magical, serendipitous story. . . . “ The Charlotte Parent described it as “Simple words and beautiful illustrations teach the timeless lesson to never give up, and that with love and patience, a dream can turn into a wonderful gift.”

The story is a wonderful tale of imagination and looking forward to the future.

Book Review: Please Stop Helping Us

Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed

A recent new book by Jason L. Riley entitled Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed has been receiving tremendously positive reviews since its release January 2016.  I currently has over 525 reviews on Amazon with a positive 4.7 star rating.

The publisher Encounter Books writes “In Please Stop Helping Us, Jason L. Riley examines how well-intentioned welfare programs are in fact holding black Americans back. Minimum-wage laws may lift earnings for people who are already employed, but they price a disproportionate number of blacks out of the labor force. Affirmative action in higher education is intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer black college graduates than would otherwise exist. And so it goes with everything from soft-on-crime laws, which make black neighborhoods more dangerous, to policies that limit school choice out of a mistaken belief that charter schools and voucher programs harm the traditional public schools that most low-income students attend.”

This book dePlease Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeedbunks the common theories that claim to help the poor with welfare programs, creating massive barriers to poor minorities.  The author shows the methods that are in place which are creating counterproductive results with low socioeconomic advancement.

Stop Helping, Start Really Looking…

The author Jason L. Riley is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a columnist for the Wall Street Journal. He lives in suburban New York City with his wife and three children.  The reviews from readers are overwhelming positive on this new breathtaking and hard hitting book.  One reader writes “Riley does not seem to write the book solely to rip on liberals but to demonstrate the social disasters that have trapped so many African Americans” and another states “Mr. Riley doesn’t disparage the good intentions behind the ideas and programs that have been created, but points out the utter failure to achieve the goals for which they were designed.”

Riley has perhaps written one of the most pivotal books shining the light on welfare programs that trap people into a life of poverty.  These same programs limit education, reduce job opportunities and create crime.  An amazing book that cuts to the heart of a sensitive issue on a national scale.

Stop Helping People Into the System, Help Them Out of It…

The giving away of money as a solution in the form of welfare is encouraging people not to work, and ultimately keeps them in the never-ending cycle of poverty.  The parachute of free money may appear to be a salvation, but ultimately it brings them down.  A growing percentage of recipients in the welfare system are turning to illicit drug use, and falling even further into the world of addiction and crime which further compounds the problem.  In Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed, Riley shines a spotlight to lead African Americans out of the shadows of the welfare programs and beyond the barriers it creates.  A poignant book that will make you reconsider what you know.
